There are multiple elements to creating a successful production that helps with engaging an audience—everything must deal with making sure that things properly set the mood of the production and continuing to set the mood throughout it. While it is important that what we see visually conveys what is happening in the film, it is equally important that we hear equally investing audio to accompany it. One can argue that the creation of an outstanding film is not all just audio, and that everything else plays a role into it; however, audio does play a massive role in bringing everything together.
Audio doesn’t even have to be music related. It can be the way that an actor delivers an important line in a movie, or the way that a background noise accompanies the scene where two characters are talking. There are many little things that fit within the umbrella of what audio engineers have to deal with when they’re editing audios in film that’s not just music. If something is off, especially if it’s a big noticeable mistake that is very much out of place, it can throw off the entire feel of the scene and keep the audience from keeping their investment in the movie.
The Netflix show “Arcane” utilizes music and audio in such a unique way that helps the audience become intensely invested in the show. “Arcane” uses the tactic of diagetic music that not only is music for the audience to listen to while watching an intense scene, but is actually music that is part of the universe and is playing within the world at the same time that we’re watching this. The very first episode of “Arcane” showcases this, with the song “Playground” sung by Bea Miller playing in the background when we’re first introduced to the gritty undercity of Zaun, which slowly transforms into music that is played in a bar, introducing the atmosphere of where the main characters reside.
(this part of the clip cuts before we can see the bar fully, but at least you get the first half of the song to listen to!)
